Monitor  Materials Reviewer  Library Clerk  Research Assistant

Title: Cancer Resource Center Monitor

Purpose: The Monitor provides coverage of the Cancer Resource Center during selected hours of operation. Assisting visitors in the use of on-site resources and in locating materials to meet their expressed needs.

Responsibilities

  1. Greet all visitors; describe CRC services and programs; offer assistance or just allow them to browse. Log all visits to the CRC on appropriate form.

  2. Assist visitors to locate materials, signing out selections that can be borrowed or kept for personal use or completing Request Forms when materials are not immediately available.

  3. Assist visitors who are using the computer software or accessing the Internet. ( Any volunteer that needs instruction in using our computers for Internet or software access will receive training before assignment.)

  4. Assist in maintaining the display, ordering of materials to replenish supplies and re-filing of materials used. A site map is readily available to locate all holdings in the collection.

Qualifications

  • An adult who has the communication and listening skills needed to interact with the public.

  • Must read, write and speak English. The ability to read, write and speak other languages is highly desirable but not mandatory.

  • Many visitors will be dealing with cancer directly. The volunteer should feel comfortable working with issues of disease and illness of others, be sensitive, nonjudgmental, compassionate, and respectful of the users right to privacy and confidentiality.

  • Personal experience with cancer on the part of the volunteer or their family is not a prerequisite. It is preferable that a volunteer who has been a cancer patient be at least six months past completion of their cancer treatments before volunteering their services at the Resource Center.

  • Background experience in education, healthcare, office skills, or information services is valuable but not mandatory. Training and supervision of procedures is provided.

  • All volunteers must complete the hospital's volunteer orientation and physical as required by the Westchester Medical Center Volunteer Office.

Orientation

Orientation will be accomplished by on-site training under the supervision of the Cancer Resource Center Director or her designee. Computer access training will be provided for any interested volunteer. Support and supervision by CRC staff will be ongoing.
