The Cancer Journey:
Navigating Life's Transitions

We experience many transitions throughout our lives, but a cancer diagnosis can trigger one of the most significant changes in our lifetime.

This 6-week support program presents those facing cancer with creative tools and skills to successfully navigate this important life period. In a supportive group structure, we explore such interactive strategies as life mapping, critical thinking, breathing exercises, QiGong, sounding and toning, meditation, journal writing, dreamwork, creative expression, and more.

Facilitator: Ruth Matthews, MA, Adult Educator and Arts Administrator at Northern Westchester Center for the Arts. Ms. Matthews has has personal experience with cancer and its challenges.

Date: Consecutive Thursdays from September 19th through October 24, 2002

Time: 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM. Light supper served.

Cancer Caregiver Connection

This support group has been organized to address the unique emotional needs of those caring for a loved one who has cancer. The group will be cofacilitated by both an oncology certified nurse and certified social worker. Each meeting will begin with a brief topical presentation.

Time: 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM

Support Groups for Women Living with Cancer

  • Feeling alone with your thoughts and emotions?
  • Wondering if you are a burden to those closest to you?
  • Confused about all the options offered and well-intended advice?
  • Conflicted about where to concentrate your energies?
  • Looking for a way to refocus your priorities?
  • Questioning direction and meaning of your life?

Two professionally-led support groups have been organized to meet the unique emotional needs of women with:

  • Newly diagnosed breast cancer
  • Advanced or recurrent cancers of any type

Each 75 minute group will be cofacilitated by Gregg Felice, CSW, a clinical social worker, and Margot Schoeps RN, MSN, a psychiatric clinical nurse specialist. Both have expertise in assisting individuals with the crisis of cancer.

Date: Consecutive Wednesdays

Time:  Newly Diagnosed: 5:00 PM to 6:15 PM
 Advanced or Recurrent: 6:30 PM to 7:45 PM

People Helping People

People Helping People is a patient/family support group facilitated by an Oncology Nurse and a certified Social Worker. Patients, families and friends meet weekly to share their experiences, issues and concerns. A guest speaker is often invited to speak on a wide range of topics suggested by participants. There is no charge and participation is open to all regardless of treatment center or team. Refreshments are served.

When: Wednesdays from 11:00 AM to 12:00 Noon

Where: Radiation Medicine conference room at Westchester Medical Center
